North Island Ski Champs

North Island Ski Champs

Finnley Binsbergen competed in the North Island Primary and Intermediate Ski Champs at Whakapapa from August 30 through to September 3. On race day, the sun was out and the snow was perfect. All competitors got three giant slalom runs, and the best of those runs would count towards the final placing. Out of a field of 176 Intermediate boys, Finnley had to start with bib number 64 and had three very good runs. His final result placed him 11th overall and that also meant he was the fastest Taranaki skier. The competition there was quite fierce with at least eight racers from Francis Douglas School, all placed behind Finnley. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hold the Dual Slalom planned for the next day and also the border cross had to be cancelled because of bad weather.

Anyway, well done Finnley for an awesome result in the individual GS course.

Sports Report – Term 3, Week 6

Sports Report – Term 3, Week 6

Coastal sports teams and individuals continue to thrive on the sports fields with the month of August being one of the most successful for a number of years.

The Coastal Schools boys 2nd XV, playing out of our school, completely upset the form book to win the Taranaki Secondary Schools Premier 5 competition. Having lost to both NPBHS 6ths and Central 2nd XV they were not expected to cause many problems at the semi final and final stages. Unfortunately, for them they did not reckon on the Coastal spirit as first the team beat NPBHS 6ths 14-12 in the semi final and then dispatched the Central 2nd XV in a big way 49-10 in the final. The Central team was the same one the boys had lost 5-48 just 4 weeks previously.

Sports Report – Term 3, Week 3

Two weeks of a very busy Third Term has almost come and gone and with it comes the transition from winter to summer sports in the later part of the term. However some of the winter codes continue with soccer leading the way.

One of the successes of the winter has been the Senior Girls soccer team. This team has competed in the Secondary Schools competition, on Wednesday afternoon’s, and despite struggling in the early part the team has gone from strength to strength and recorded several good wins over schools much bigger than ours. With just one game remaining, against the old foe Opunake HS, the girls will be looking to finish the season in style. This game is at Opunake HS next Wednesday with a 3.30pm kickoff.

Interschool Sport Success

Interschool Sport Success

In Taranaki Secondary School Sports events, we have been to the fore again with Jordan Linn winning he B grade section of the Squash Champs. This was the highest level played on the day. A small team of runners contested with the TSSSA Cross Country Champs in Hawera. River Stone ran very well to record a 4th place in the Junior Boys race. This is an outstanding result, given that there were 53 runners in total.

The recent Golf Champs saw Coastal come out as the winner, only to have the title taken away when it was discovered that one of the players had signed an incorrect scorecard. This was most unfortunate as the team had played exceptionally well in trying conditions and were worthy winners. However, this is the way it goes, and rules are rules, so it has become a valuable learning experience for the player concerned, and I’m sure it will never happen again.

Sports Report – Term 2, Week 9

Sports Report – Term 2, Week 9

Our Netball teams continue to display excellent skills and results, which is a credit to the high level of coaching they are receiving. The Senior Girls team have lost just one of their last five games, while the Year 6  team is maintaining its winning run.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Ralph and Mr. Normanton, our field hockey teams continue to thrive. The ‘A’ Team is unbeaten, while the ‘B’ team has put together some good wins also.

Our Year 5 and 6 Rugby and Netball teams have just finished playing in the NPPA competition. Unfortunately, we were not strong enough in most games, but be recorded great wins in both sports over St. Pius in the last round. The Year 7 and 8 Rugby and Netball competitions get underway next term with the first round of games against Auroa School on Friday, July 23 at Coastal.

Duathlon

Duathlon

One of the highlights of our school sporting calendar is about to take place on Thursday, June 23. It’s the annual Duathlon. The event starts at 11.00am with Years 0-2 and will finish at about 1.10pm after Years 11-13. This event is keenly contested by the students and has become a major fundraiser for the PE department. We want to see as many students as possible taking part, and look forward to a large number of parents attending as spectators.

For those students who wish to bring their bikes to school before the event, please bring them to the gym where we will lock them away.
