2011 Magazine Sports Team Reports

Thanks to those coaches who have returned their magazine reports to school. If you have not done so yet, please return them as soon as possible. Also, if you have any good photos of Coastal students at school events that are suitable for publication in our magazine, please either email them to me, or leave a hard copy at the school office (these will be returned).

Thanks, Marian Richardson.

Sports News – Term 3, Week 9

Sports News – Term 3, Week 9

How I love seeing our students so successful. It really is a time to enjoy the success of our students in a variety of sporting events over the past few weeks.

Cross Country for our Juniors has dominated the sports scene recently with the Coastal Cross Country and the Taranaki Primary School Cross Country Champs. I gave the results for the Year 4-6 Coastal Cross Country in the last Newsletter, and here are the highlights from the Year 7 and 8 Coastal Cross Country. Thomas Morgan was an easy winner in the 11 years Boys race, Mitchell Fleming was 4th in the 12 years Boys race, Anne-Maree Harris 3rd in the Year 13 Girls and Jess Gibson 4th.

Following this event a team of 28 athletes represented Coastal at the Taranaki Primary School Cross Country Champs in Hawera last week. All our runners performed very well with the standouts being Thomas Morgan 10th in the 11 Years Boys, Jacob Whittle 13th in the 9 and under boys, Jordan Grylls 16th in the 9 & Under Girls and Mitchell Fleming 17th in the 12 Years Boys.

Rippa’ Rugby World Cup 2011

Rippa’ Rugby World Cup 2011

Coastal embraced the World Cup Fever with a whole school Rippa Rugby tournament on Wednesday, September 14. Despite the chilly weather, our students each adopted a World Cup team, and the school fields came alive with colour and sound.

New Zealand emerged winners in the Years 0-2 tournament, with Canada taking out the Year 3-6 category. Tonga emerged victorious for Years 7-13. A fun afternoon was had by everyone.

Sports News – Term 3, Week 3

Congratulations to Hamish Kape (Taranaki Under 14), Kael Johnson (Central Ross Brown) and Mitchell Fleming (Southern Ross Brown) for having been selected in these respective rugby teams. Several other students are currently trialing for various other sports teams and we wish them well.

Year 7-8 inter-school rugby and netball are underway with the rugby team playing in the Taranaki Trophy, and netball in the Mainland Trophy. The teams had their first games last week against Eltham. The Netball team went down 12-39 but the rugby team recoded a big win at 67-22. The next round of games for these teams is on Tuesday, August 30, against Opunake Primary in Opunake.

And a large group of Year 7 & 8 students took part in the Rippa Rugby tournament at Yarrow Stadium last Friday. Despite not winning any games both teams performed really well. The students then stayed on to watch Taranaki record a very lucky win over Tasman in the ITM Cup.

Our skiers and snowboarders have had no luck in getting their competition underway with insufficient snow. Hopefully this week’s dump will see them up the mountain and competing.

For the first time in a number of years, we will represent in the TSSSA Year 9-10 basketball tournament. We have a girls and boys team entered and we are looking forward to seeing how they perform. Results will be posted in the next Sports News.

Sports News – Term 2, Week 11

Some great results to report from TSSSA sports events over the past few weeks. Our Golf team finished third-equal, just seven shots behind the winners, in the tournament held at Stratford.

The TSSSA 10 Pin Bowling Champs were held on Sunday, June 26 and our Senior Girls Number 1 team came out the overall winners. The team was Crystal Baker, Rebecca Winter, Jurnee Brown and Miyu Inoue. And to cap off a great achievement, Miyu was the best girls bowler on the day. All other teams played well and had a lot of fun.

And the pair of Michael Winter and Jonathon Adams were second at the TSSSA 8 Ball Pool tournament held last weekend.

Sports News – Term 2, Week 5

Great News…after an absence of 3 years the TSSSA Indoor Bowls championship title returned to CTS following the event last week. The team of seven, Hamish Kape (singles) Brook Gray and Barney Doyle (pairs) and Stanton Brown, Ben Brophy, Daniel Doyle and Joseph Doyle (fours) won 10 of the 12 games played to easily win the title. The Fours were the overall winners of that section while the pairs were 2nd and Hamish Kape in the single won 3 of his 4 games.

Two of the bowlers, Hamish Kape and Brook Gray will now go on to represent the school at the North Island Champs (Tauranga) in July and the National Champs (Wellington) in August.

Well winter sport is now well underway and despite some early hiccups with the weather all teams have played at least two games.
