After Hours Art classes have started this term and students have yet again been expressing their talents in Art. This term, students have been exploring the uses of paper-mâché. Years 3 and 4 created some very colorful piggybanks; curly tails and all. Each student set a goal for what they would save for, and I wish them luck!
Years 5 to 8 students are creating imaginative paper-mâché creatures inspired by artists Julie Arkell and Valerie Weberpal. They are currently buiding up the paper and paste forms, to be followed by paint, collage, and mixed media. The results will be exciting to see!

If anyone has not yet wandered down to the art room to check out the mural painted on the outside wall, then do. The Year 9 students only have a few final touches to complete the work, but already it looks outstanding and the colour has brought, to a once drab courtyard, just what was needed. And it doesn’t stop there!
This term, Year 10 students are working on plywood cutout art that will also adorn the senior courtyard. Inspired by artist models Richard Killeen and Robert McLeod, students have designed art in which an image will form within a plywood shape. These fun shapes, and their colour, will certainly add a new perspective to the space. I would like to thank Sandi Hickey and the Year 9 and 10 students for their wonderful contribution to our school. We would also like to mention our thanks to Resene, who sponsored our paints.

It has been an exciting term for the Arts Department! The Junior School had the oppourtunity to view exhibitions at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery. Years 1 to 3 viewed the Elephants for Sale and Songbirds exhibition. This was followed by a very creative dance workshop in which the students created some wonderful bird and elephant costumes which inspired a class dance of contrasts. This was very enjoyable to watch, and the students really enjoyed themselves.
Years 3 to 6 viewed the Nomadology exhibition by artist John Reynolds. The artist has explored his interest in words and their practical uses, ranging from steet signs, fairytales, musical lyrics and war. Students participated in either the Taking Signs or Building with Words workshop, in which students were asked to explore colour and text inspired by the exhibition. This was a great way for students to explore and understand the importance and power of words and also see words portrayed in art, and the meanings that can be drawn from this. The artwork created by students was inspirational, and the students enjoyed their experience.
The exhibitions are still on show at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth.
