Sports News – Term 3, Week 9

How I love seeing our students so successful. It really is a time to enjoy the success of our students in a variety of sporting events over the past few weeks.
Cross Country for our Juniors has dominated the sports scene recently with the Coastal Cross Country and the Taranaki Primary School Cross Country Champs. I gave the results for the Year 4-6 Coastal Cross Country in the last Newsletter, and here are the highlights from the Year 7 and 8 Coastal Cross Country. Thomas Morgan was an easy winner in the 11 years Boys race, Mitchell Fleming was 4th in the 12 years Boys race, Anne-Maree Harris 3rd in the Year 13 Girls and Jess Gibson 4th.
Following this event a team of 28 athletes represented Coastal at the Taranaki Primary School Cross Country Champs in Hawera last week. All our runners performed very well with the standouts being Thomas Morgan 10th in the 11 Years Boys, Jacob Whittle 13th in the 9 and under boys, Jordan Grylls 16th in the 9 & Under Girls and Mitchell Fleming 17th in the 12 Years Boys.
Given that some races had in excess of 100 runners the runners who finished in the top half of their races did very well.
And the TSSSA Road Relays for Years 7-10 were held recently, with Coastal represented by a boys and girls team in each race. The Year 7 and 8 Boys finished 9th, the Girls 14th, the Year 9 and 10 Boys 9th and the Girls 8th.
Four students have been selected in the NP Ravens Representative Inline Hockey teams to play in the National Tournament in Hamilton during the school holidays. We wish Liam and Josh Gibson, Rodney Cruden-Powell and Cody Luckin the best of luck.
The final round of the Year 7 and 8 inter-school Rugby and Netball was played last week against St Joseph’s Hawera. Unfortunately the rugby team could not continue their winning form and were beaten, while the Girls Netball performed really well before going down as well.
Congratulations to our field hockey teams who finished their competitions last week. The advanced improvers grade team were runners up, while the B team were 4th in the improvers grade.
Also congratulations to Chloe Jackson who has been selected for the Taranaki Under 13s Hockey team playing in a tournament during the holidays.
Two Year 6 netball players have been nominated for the Netball Taranaki Talent ID Squad for the 2011/12 off season. Good luck to Maddy Mitchell and Rachel Appert at the Skills Day during the holidays.
This Friday we have a boys and girls team from Year 9 & 10 playing in the TSSSA Junior Volleyball Champs in New Plymouth. This is the first time we have played in this event for a couple of years so while the results are not important the progress we have made in this sport is really important.
Summer sports are just around the corner and Cricket and Inline Hockey notices should be at home by now. I need these notices returned as quickly as possible so teams can be arranged prior to the end of term.
Finally, I would like to thank all those parents who have provided transport over the past few weeks. I know it’s a very busy time of the year and your assistance is greatly appreciated.
